What Was Her Last Name?: Researching Your Female Ancestors - Reading Room

Join us on Thursday, March 23, at 5:30 p.m. when Sara Greenleaf, genealogist researcher and Interim College Librarian of Warren Hunting Smith Library at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, gives a talk on the difficulties of tracing your female relatives.

Genealogists normally follow the breadcrumbs of documents to figure out the facts of a person's life story, but ln times when women were not allowed to vote, hold property in their own names, inherit property, earn wages, sue at court in her own name, immigrate without money (at Ellis Island, it was assumed if a woman arrived with no money she was here for prostitution), where should we look for evidence of their lives when we normally look for documentation in these places? Greenleaf will discuss this and more. Join us!
