Bi-Sesqui-Centennial Tree Planting
We welcome the community to join us for a commemorative oak tree planting at 1:00pm on October 22, 2024.
- The Shepard homestead, the original iteration of our current building, was completed in 1824 by Joshua Shepard.
- The first lending library of Dansville was opened in Maxwell Block on July 18, 1874.
- The Shepard Memorial Library, the older section of our current location, was officially opened on July 18, 1924.
The record of our auspicious institution is recorded in a text titled Acorn to Oak, a labor of love from former Dansville historian and Library Board of Trustees Member William D. Conklin. This rich and detailed chronology, now being updated by intrepid researcher David Gilbert, tells the beginning of the 150-year story of a lending library in our community. Its pages include an account of our establishment in the Shepard Memorial building, itself a notable anchor in Dansville and regional history with its ties to the founding families of Dansville and Rochester.
Our oak tree planting will be a symbol of our commitment to providing resources and opportunities that educate, enrich, and inspire as we continue to serve our community: a visible promise of continuing to grow from acorn to oak.
This occasion is open to the public. We will have short speeches from our Library Board of Trustees President, Rhea Walker, and our Library Director, Margo Prak, on our front lawn at 1:00pm. Light refreshments in our Holden Room will follow the ceremony.
