The Great Caldecott Challenge!

The Great Caldecott Challenge! Online

Children between the ages of 3 and 9 are invited to participate in the Great Caldecott Challenge.  The goal is for children to read 20 Caldecott Award winning books by August 31st.  The Macedon Public Library had over 200 of these books in their own special area, so finding books to choose from is really easy!

Caldecott Award winning books are books whose illustrations are so outstanding that one might actually be able to tell the story by viewing the pictures alone.  While reading these books, talk about the pictures with your child.  What did the artist use to create them (watercolor, pencil, collage, etc).  What do they like about the pictures?  What do they dislike?  Do they think the pictures help to tell the story?  Why or why not?

It is important for young children to be aware of the illustrations in books.  As they are learning to read, the illustrations provide a useful support for them.  In addition, talking about the pictures also helps children to develop better comprehension and understanding of the book that has been read.  Finally, figuring out how the artist created the picture will help to develop an awareness that creative expression can be accomplished using many different materials.

Have fun with this challenge!  If the challenge is completed by the end of the month, your child will get to choose a Beanie Baby to keep!
